5 tips for better winter cycling

The days are getting slightly longer and perhaps less miserable. We even had some sunshine over in London (who would have thought :))

That being said it can still be very very nippy. However, because we care about you here  at RIDR lights and we want you to keep on cycling, here are 5 tips for how to conquer those winter roads with ease.

  1. Dress to keep warm
  2. Make sure you are warm before you start
  3. Be visible
  4. Go out in group
  5. Take care of your bike

1. Dress to keep warm

Heat escapes through your head, hands, feet and torso so dress accordingly. A baklava under your helmet is an amazing way to keep warm even though it might not be the most fashionable item in your wardrobe 🙂 Gloves for your hand are a must and thermal socks are a dream. Make sure you use both as they are life savers! Finally, for your upper body the way to go is layers for days. Try and keep them light and breathable.

2. Make sure you are warm before you start

If you start off cold you’ll be lost. Please have a hot drink in a toasty little room before you go out and face the elements. This will facilitate your warm-up on the bike.

4. Being visible = being safe

Who would go out in the cold and dark? That’s what the average driver thinks. So make sure you are visible! A good set of bicycle lights (e.g., headlight, rear flasher) will significantly boost your visibility.

4. Go out in group

It’s not always easy to cycle throughout the winter. So try and get a nice group of friends and just go. Cycling in a group can be so much more enjoyable. Especially when your friend acts as a personal windshield 🙂

5. Take care of your bike

The winter takes its toll on many things and your bicycle is on off them. Make sure you maintain it properly; clean the bike, gears, chains, breaks and wheel rims on a regular basis. Ideally after every ride, especially a wet one.
